Inclusive Estates at Learning Places Scotland

This week, Haverstock attended Learning Enviroments Scotland in Glasgow! Our Partner Claire and Associate Anna, represented Haverstock at the conference, taking part in crucial discussions on design for education.

In ‘Inclusive Estate’, Claire Jackson of Galliford Try, Claire Barton of Haverstock and Jennifer Freeman from NORR Architects explored the similarities and differences in designing and delivering schools for children with SEND in England and Additional Support Needs in Scotland.

A photo taken from behind the audience at Learning Places Scotland. Guests
wear headphones though which they can hear the presentation and conversation.
In the frame, you can see the panel speaking to the right of a screen with the
presentation.

Using Haverstock’s Marjorie McClure School and NORR’s Beatllie School as key examples, Claire shared how SEND design guidance in England differs from guidance in Scotland, and what we can learn from each other, from designations and briefing processes to low-energy strategies and the future of inclusive schools.

Another photo of the talk, from another angle. You can see guests watching,
the panellists present with screens either side. On the screen there is an internal photo
of an inclusive school.

Many thanks to both Jennifer and Claire for joining Haverstock in this important discussion, advocating for inclusive learning environments. It was rewarding to explorehow both England and Scotland are evolving their estates and improving inclusive user-led design.
