Open City Young City Makers Trip to Kings Cross

This Month, Haverstock has been taking part in the Open City Young City Makers Programme, engaging students aged 9-10 in design and the built environment.

This year, we are getting students to consider biodiversity, natural building materials and inclusive design with our brief to design a forest school for a SEND school, based on one of our real life projects, Balgores School.

Last week, we brought students to Kings Cross to explore inspiring sites for their forest school design, considering opportunities for nature based learning in inner-city London. Students explored sustainable community-led design at the Global Generation Triangle Site, investigated the woodland inspired playscape at Chilton Square Playground by Root & Erect and considered nature-based design at Bagley Walk and Gasholders Park.

Taking inspiration, ideas and criticisms from these sites, students will collaboratively design and build a model of their dream forest school in the next workshop!

Young City Makers is part of Open City London’s education program, which aims to bring learning to life, helping students develop their collaboration and model making skills, as well as understand their role in shaping the city.
